Wee Read
A Program of United Way of Northeast Georgia

Wee Read was launched in January 2007 in an effort to encourage the vital practice of reading to young children. In partnership with Dolly Parton Imagination Library, every registered child from birth to age 5 in Athens-Clarke County receives one free, age-appropriate hardback book in the U.S. mail each month. This highly effective program takes advantage of the natural excitement connected with receiving a package in the mail — children are eager to open and dive into the brand new book that comes addressed specifically to them. Parents are reminded and motivated to read to their young children when they receive a colorful, new, interesting book each month. This excitement surrounding books and reading will lead to a life-long love of reading in young children, which is an important characteristic for educational success. Included with each Wee Read book is a parent communication piece which presents reading and activity ideas related to the book, parenting tips, local information, and sponsorship acknowledgments. The Wee Read program is available to all children living in Athens-Clarke County regardless of socio-economic status and costs just $36 per child annually.
